One of the few herbal medicines known to have a progesterone-type activity within the body, chaste berry is a specific for menstrual and perimenopausal problems. Acting on the pituitary gland at the base of the brain, it improves menstrual regularity.
Take up to 40 drops (2ml) first thing in the morning during the second half of a menstrual cycle to stimulate hormone production in irregular menstrual cycles or PMS. It is easy to overdose, so start with a low dose and gradually increase the amount if there are no side effects. It will also ease migraine or acne related to the menstrual cycle.
Readily available commercially; follow the dosage directions on the package and take to ease PMS.
Prefers well-drained soil in full sun and a warm site. Sow seeds in a cold frame in autumn or spring; transplant to 4in (10cm) pots when large enough to handle. Alternatively, take semi-ripe cuttings in summer. Grow until well established before planting in permanent positions. Protect from cold, dry winds and severe winters. Prune in spring while still dormant.
